Five keys once hung on the doors of Pappy’s Stitzel-Weller Distillery - symbols of hospitality and the five key steps that went into making his fine bourbon. That history later inspired Pappy & Co.’s three-key logo, representing Pappy’s three great-granddaughters and co-founders of Pappy & Co. The actual Pappy & Co. mark appears as a hidden detail inside the hinge, revealed only when the temple opens.

Who are Pappy & Co.?

The company founded by the great-granddaughters of Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle. They hold the rights to the Van Winkle name, and we designed this frame with them directly rather than licensing a logo.

Who is Shady Rays?

An independent, American-owned eyewear company founded in Kentucky in 2014. We make polarized sunglasses, snow goggles and prescription eyewear, and we have more than 340,000 five-star reviews. This is the most premium thing we have ever made.

What is 20-Year Pappy Van Winkle, and why is it so hard to get?

It is the second-most-aged bourbon in the Van Winkle range, released roughly once a year in very small quantities and gone the day it appears. Twenty years in a barrel is rare in itself: most bourbon is not worth drinking by then, and some barrels have evaporated to almost nothing by the time they are opened.

What does this collaboration represent?

Two independent Kentucky companies who build things the same way. The Van Winkle family has spent generations on craftsmanship and patience. We approached this frame the same way, which is why the details are real rather than applied.

How limited is this edition?

999 pairs. Each is numbered inside the temple. There is no second run and there will not be one.

Why are there no returns, and why is this not covered by Lost & Broken?

Every pair is numbered once. Pair 412 cannot be made again, so we cannot replace it, and that is the same thing that makes it worth owning. Every other pair of Shady Rays is covered as usual.

How does it ship?

Insured, with a signature required on delivery, and the cost is included in the price. Someone needs to be there to sign for it. If a pair is lost in transit we see the claim through and make it right.
