Do you have a passion for product development? Do you crave innovation and ingenuity on a regular basis? Shady Rays is looking for a Product Developer on the West Coast to aid in the planning, creating, developing and testing of new products as well as improving existing products. This position will serve as a critical member of the product team and will help drive the strategic plan and multi-year product development roadmap in order to help Shady Rays achieve the mid to long range goals.

Position Summary:

The Product Developer works cross functionally with all of our internal teams and requires organization, creativity, a proactive attitude, the ability to work independently, flexible and with the willingness to learn in order to deliver products on time and aligned with company strategies.

They are responsible for owning different stages of development for all product categories keeping in mind cost, margin, delivery calendar, and salability. They are able to handle multiple projects concurrently while adhering to budgets and timelines and will provide ideas around improving processes, innovation, and new materials for all product categories as necessary. They are comfortable working in a fast paced environment and do not shy away from challenges.

Job responsibilities (including, but not limited to the following):

● Own various stages of the entire development process and ensure daily development needs are met at the internal and factory level

● Builds, organizes and maintains detailed development files with cost, lead times, codes, etc.

● Owns the internal master line sheet and is responsible for accuracy of information for all categories

● Proactively communicates deadlines with internal and external teams (vendors and suppliers) to ensure product delivery dates are met

● Proactively troubleshoot development or process anomalies with suppliers and internal team in order to stay on calendar

● Create and implement all relevant product processes and documents

● Responsible for FAS completion for all owned projects and manage FAS catalog

● Aid in QC procedures/reviews at factory and fulfillment level

● Provide product options to cross functional teams while continuously communicating to all team members and product stakeholders on product updates, approvals, and issues

● Works closely with upper management to ensure calendar dates are met and satisfied

● Reviews all costs and presents to Product Director for approval

● Analyzes all costs for best cost savings and offers solutions for margin gains

● Assists in strategy development for all categories

● Researches new technologies and materials

● Proposes new ideas to help the creation of innovation product or enhance current products

● Works with factories to adopt new production capabilities

● Analyzes success and failures of each product seasonally to influence design/development of following seasons

● Ensures consistency in costs across all factories

● Occasional travel required (HQ, factories, trade shows, etc.)

Go to Market/Brand collaboration

● Provide accurate product details to brand team for go to market launch documentation

● Collaborates with brand team around market research projects and develops understanding of target consumer broadly socializing insights within the company

● Analyzes marketplace consistently to ensure products are competitive and superior to others


● Reside on the West Coast

● 3+ years product development experience

● Knowledgeable in the optical/eyewear industry a plus

● Understanding of the eyewear QC process a plus

● Attention to detail and meticulous organizational skills in service of your development projects

● Proactive approach to identifying and acting on ways to improve the product or processes while continually pushing the vision forward

● Comfortable with the remote working environment

● Able to function independently and in a team environment, with excellent collaboration skills

● Strong time management with ability to toggle between daily and long-term tasks, keeping workstreams moving forward simultaneously

● Strong problem-solving skills, especially independently (due to remote working environment)

● Works efficiently and effectively, with an eye on timeline and deadlines

● Comfortable communicating with senior team members to receive feedback

● Able to challenge ideas while showing respect for others and form productive and positive cross functional relationships

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Good organizational skills that support the rest of the team

Job Type: Full-time

Salary Range: $75,000-$80,000/annually
